The buildings which consist of small self contained units or flats are called an apartment house, a house containing many apartments which are available for rent. North Americans call these units as apartments and in other commonwealth countries like UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, and India; these are referred to as flats. These flats are meant for lower income group people who do not have sufficient money to buy a house or land to make their house. These flats to rent are available on rent, payable monthly or weekly as per the tenancy agreement. Apartments are also a rental property which is given on rent but they are a bit costlier than flats.

Flats can be given on exclusive basis, meant for one person or family as well as shared basis where few bachelors (mostly students) share the flat and the expenses like rent, food, electricity, water, maintenance etc. Some buildings are made exclusively for flats and some buildings, which are old and private in nature have a spare space where flats are accommodated to be leased out on rent. The buildings or properties which offer flats to rent are commonly categorized into for classes in most of the countries they are:

Class A – This type of building is new and offers luxurious flats, with high rent, located in the posh areas. They are meant for executives who earn high salaries with high standard of life.

Class B – This class of building is 10-25 yrs old, well maintained flats, located in prominent areas and offered to middle class tenants with good standard of life. They are slightly cheaper than class A.

Class C – this class of building is normally 30-40 yrs old, meant for moderate income group people who take the flat on rent with an ambition of spending their life in the flats. These buildings are located in the centre of a city, normally close to the business hub.

Class D – buildings with subsidized rentals, meant for masses of low income group. This type of building is located in lower grade areas.

People willing to put their flats to rent can easily find their tenants by contacting the brokers or referring to web sites which offer this type of service.
